Lorre's got a cover!


A small progress report:

  • Programming: I'm almost done with the item system and with the "wardrobe system" (which is kinda overkill for this game, but it absolutely isn't for my other game ;D )
  • Levels: the cemetery level, which happens to be the one I'll be sharing for my study case, is complete! I'm also done with the gray boxing for all the other scenes, which means that i'll get my ass back on blender very soon (and I also plan to experiment a lot with materials, especially for one particular level)
  • Gameplay: I might add a "stealth-ish" part, but, given the game's already slow pace and the fact that there is no game over, I think I'll handle that section differently.
  • Art: I decided to scrap the "fake painting 3d renders" character portraits and to redo them in the style of the game cover. Not that I kinda lack the material time to do so or anything...
  • Release date: Ok so... the entries for this year's EEK3 are open and will close on July 15th, with the presentation obviously being during the spooky moth. Moreover, I have to hand over the demo for the game design class exam on July 5th, which means that I need to have a presentable, but not necessarily complete product by the end of the month. Needless to say that I'm slightly torn about when I should release it, because on one hand I really like the idea of dropping it as an "EEKSCLUSIVE" , but on the other it annoys the shit out of me to keep it in the freezer for so long because it's a small game that'll be basically ready long before October, and above all, because I really, really want to start working on my other game. Having said that, I'll probably release it anyway during July alongside the promo material and, if it gets a spot at eek3, it's still free advertising for an hypothetically already released, unknown indie project.


Also, I'm kinda starting to miss my usual, raunchy music videos, so something unexpected might pop up at any moment...

Lorraine Lives!


The development progress of the game is really aligning with what I had in mind, although there's still some shit that I'm figuring out: for example, the aesthetic of specific environments, like the one in the video, where the fog might potentially ruin the clarity of the visuals (I'm 99% sure that I'll remove it from the cemetery). I'm also focusing on understanding technical shit such as timelines and audio management.


Here's some more details:

  • Programming: the only "technical" shit remaining to do is part of the inventory management and the options menu (probably? the settings are very barebone, so I might actually not include a "traditional" options menu)
  • Characters: the npc models are all finished! I'll show more of them in the next preview!
  • Assets: the cemetery is almost done, one of the other levels is about 50% done and the others are like at 10% (thank fuck the low poly style allows to make shit very fast)
  • Sound: I'm refining continuosly the OST
  • Release date: the game is scheduled for release between mid-June and mid-July, UNLESS a new EEK3 is announced. If they accept the game for the showcase, I will release it on that day then.
  • Monetization: it will be available free for a limited period of time, then I plan to sell it for ass-cheap like 99 cents.
  • Platform: Itch, then Steam.

Hey sweets!

I didn't die; I was locked up in a coffin at the bottom of a lake and forgot how to open things.


Bullshit aside, a lot of stuff has happened in the last few months that forcibly kept me from making anything.

This "forced break" made me particularly aware of my giant pile of unfinished stuff and really made me revaluate my "release schedule", so, from now on, I will focus on starting and finishing one project at a time.


But what about the half-made stuff?

Think of them as dead, mostly because the more time passes, the more obsolete they look and feel.

I will make a collage of all the half-assed animations eventually.


Now, onto the sad shit:

The old ass SSD I had Pretenatural on decided to commit seppuku and fully obliterate dozens and dozens of assets, leaving me with my ass on the ground. So, Preternatural as it was conceived is dead. For now...

I've invested too much time on that game, and I won't let some bitch ass hardware failure stop me from finishing my spooky witch simulator!


Conversely, Porcelain is being dissected and repurposed for another game (This doesn't mean it will never be released, though).

Unlike Porcelain and Preternatural, "Project Bereavement" will and must be released around June/July, as it is my case study for a game development class.


Here's some details:

  • Victorian horror setting. Goth mommy protagonist. Yes I'm still very bitter about Pretenatural.
  • Retro graphics. I'm aiming for a Dreamcast-like aesthetic with low-poly models, low-res textures, some pixelization, very little post processing (probably just bloom) and very, very sparingly used pbr techniques. Honestly, I've always wanted to give retro graphics a chance, even if they're extremely different from my usual style. The concept of "less is more" intrigues me a lot and would allow to heavily cut the production times regarding graphics.
  • It will be a basic, exploration based point-and-click game: think about "The Cat Lady" and "Fran Bow", but set in a small, freely explorable 3D environment.
  • It will be short, concise and self-conclusive. Basically as if it was a playable version of one my music videos.
  • The Ost is ready, but it will be available on my YT only when the game is out.
  • It will be available on Itch .
  • I'm planning to make a devlog for documentation purposes (and also to avoid some unfortunate scenarios that have already happened at my university). Get ready to listen to my obnoxious voice!

I think that the project is ripe enough to spill some info:

  • It is going to be a short, exploration-focused horror game, but something won't make the act of explorating that easy.
  • The initial inspiration that started the whole project is the movie PHENOMENA by Dario Argento (which is also the inspiration behind the very first Clock tower game!), expect plenty of easter eggs!
  • It is the prologue to Preternatural (albeith the latter will be completely different gameplay wise), so some things will inevitably appear a little "nebulous". It can be still enjoyed as its own thing tho!
  • The game will be available for free on Itch, and the soundtrack will be available on my Youtube channel.
  • Hopefully it will be able to run on potatoes and toasters (I have a potato myself) without sacrificing too much graphically wise (CAUSE I NEED MAH AMBIENT OCCLUSION JUICE).
  • I can't really give a release date, however, just know that if a new trailer drops, it means it's really close
  • Just a note: the music box girl from the teaser is not the protagonist.

All them are stuck in limbo until I'm done with Porcelain :/

POSSESSION and FILTHIER still have priority over the other ones though.

I had to put my super secret project on hold,

but,

given the recent bulshittery that has happened regarding Unity, I'll try to finish and publish this thing as soon as possible.


My biggest worries are now about Preternatural, because even thought it is still early enough for an engine switch,

I'm not really a fan of Unreal and as much as I love Godot, it is still very immature for 3D

Hey sweets!

(it's been a while ayyyyy)

let's get straight to the juicy stuff: what's coming next?


Animations

  • FILTHIER: the updated version/ remake/ remaster/ kinda sequel of FILTH (because you can never have enough Divine on screen)
  • ACID PRINCESS: a very trippy music video... with a dark twist ;D
  • STITCHES vol.2: more stuff that didn't make the cut in the first video!
  • MALICE: Alice in wonderland but make it kinky. Fun fact, this video's concept was orignally MOTEL's, but I later decided that it deserved to be its own thing
  • And more!


Preternatural

Game development is hard. Especially if it is your first game, you're a solodev and you don't know wtf you're doing :/

Also having to deal daily with the "typical italian univerisity bulshittery" leaves you with very little time to dedicate to a long commitement thing like a game.

Hopefully I believe I have enough of a strong vision to slowly build a competent product between the forced long pauses I have to take each time I open up Unity.


On a more descriptive note, Preternatural is shaping up to be a "fashionable and gory hybrid between survival horror and hack 'n' slash with a focus on its brutal story and fucked up characters", a "slasher" if you wish.


I can not wait to show some gameplay, but until then, here's a in game kissy from Violet!

While I was modelling some gory shit for Preternatural, I noticed that all the stuff I've published until now has been pretty fucking tame and pudic for my usual standards, so expect some spicy and gory renders very soon!
