Hey sweets!


How are y'all doing?

Lately I've been discovering the joys of game design and also how much of a gorilla finger in the ass it is to find a gameplay style that fits your story and characters :/

Needless to say that project dark which is kinda stuck in a "prototyping limbo" where shit either doesn't "feel right" or I'm still too much of a scrub to properly program.

However, all is not lost as I'm still keeping up with the asset making/optimization (there's so much spicy stuff I'd love to show, but I can't...) meaning that once I nail the core stuff, stitching up the rest will be pretty fast and painless.

The only other thing I can say is that all of my experiments are leading me towards a "doll and dagger" gameplay,

I'll leave its meaning to your imagination tho ;)

Hey sweets!

Here's some history pt.2:

While Preternatural takes pretty blatantly inspiration from classical and modern Gothic horror productions,

its setting is based on an already existing one that's over four years old!

I present you with "Dance Macabre", my very first (and uncompleted) game.

Dance Macabre layed the "narrative" foundations, the lore, of Preternatural,

that's why the original "PDW" setting was Medieval and not Victorian.

If I'll ever be able to complete Preternatural y'all can bet your tits that

it'll be followed by a full blown remake of Dance (as a prequel).

Story and setting aren't the only thing that got carried over in Preternatural:

A certain character did as well, her original design up here.


But what about Preternatural?


Let's just say that I've temporarily reverted into the designing phase because the gameplay I initially thought of is a little bit too ambitious for a first, solo, indie, no-budget project.

That's also why I wanted to make a digression on Dance Macabre, as the idea of having a more "classic" RPG is very tempting.


On the technical side:

With the right amount of optimization and blood sacrifices this little engine can do some real fucking miracles!

My main goal is to have this thing to look as good as possible even on the potatoest of potato builds (so my PC lolololol)

I sincerely hope to have a playable prototype to showcase you by the end of the month, but until then -

Oooh hey sweets!

What ha happened to the dark countdown?

Some time ago I said that I was considering to learn Unity for one of my projects

I also said that Preternatural was initially supposed to be a game...

so let's just say that I'm taking some extra time to optimize as much as possible my characters

so that they are eligible for a real time graphics environment :)

Hey sweets!

History class time!

Dafuq is this?


Basically, a year ago (when everything went tits), I thought it was a good time to do something more "extensive" than my usual kinky/spooky skits. And so Project Dark Witch was born!

The core concept was simple: there's this badass witch that gets killed by her coven, comes back from the grave by making a pact with a demon and then starts fucking shit up

However there was this little issue: what kind of media was Project dark witch going to be?

A game? A short film? A comic? A porno?

It took almost 4 months to answer that question lol


As much as I liked the Idea of having a Deception/Undead knights hybrid with Bayonetta-like torture attacks , I was too much of a scrub in both coding and animating (and I had a complete disregard for optimizing shit)

So I chose the animated series route as it felt like the best way to produce something decent while getting more proficient at it (and that also functioned as a play-test ground).

And that's when I decided to step shit up a little bit and redesign everything from scratch!

The idea was to develop the initial concept and to translate it into a victorian/bloodborneque scenario:

The new dark witch, now named Violet, is inspired by Elvira, the Bride of Frankenstein, Eva Green in Penny Dreadful and the drag queen Victoria Elizabeth Black.

Similarly to the previous entries, her model suffered a lot from bad optimization, but most importantly it was very hard to adapt it to the various costume changes.

That's when and why I decided to make a new "universal" mesh that was later utilized for every other character

Having a new workflow helped a lot and allowed me to have all the main character assets ready to go in December!

VAMPIRES OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

When Project dark witch initial medieval setting transitioned into its current victorian one

(I'll expand on this tomorrow ;D ), the main character cast saw a huge revision, which included the addition of three new characters, one of them being mah boi Narcissus!


I wanted him to scream "classical vampire", so I opted for all the visual shenanigans you could expect:

pale ass skin, pointy ears, dark eye make up, livid lips, shiny red irises and ,of course, goth clothing!

He initially had grey hair but later on I took a narrative decision that me go for the full pearly white route

[let's just say that Preternatural is part of an extended (and huge) narrative universe]


Sadly, I've lost the only piece of concept art I made of him, but his first 3d iteration was extremely close to it

he suffered of two major problems however:

his rig was an unoptimized HELL and his design clashed a little bit too much with the rest of the cast

(he looked like he just got out of a MMORPG)


Luckily remaking him went as smooth as butter

There's nothing as satisfying as having real time cloth and hair physics in blender that do not drop the fps counter to 5

Hey sweets!

Today we're going to learn how to knit with cadavers!

Altho I can't still reveal who or what "Meat" is, just know that he'll bring a lot of spooks in the series!

He's also one of the characters that posses a "portrait" (I'll explain this portrait thing in the next entries)

Similarly to Aconitum, his first iteration came close to what I portrayed in the concept art,

but just not enough

However I still felt that there was something off about him

so I tried to do an unsuccessful redesign

The new beefed up version didn't really resonate with the character, and applying the original mask design

over it didn't really work out that well (you will discover why in the future)

So I took a step back and remodelled him from zero following his old appearance

I really like how he came out this time as he actually looks like a human-shaped agonizing mess that really wants to tear you apart!

OH YALL WANTED A TWIST EH?

Welcome to Dark Corners, a blog parallel to the dark countdown where I'll show some #projectdarkwitch behind the scenes stuff! Today's topic is: mah demon boi Aconitum

From the very first moment I wanted Aconitum's design to be uncanny, omnious, almost feline

with an elongated humanoid silouhette branching into spikes/horns but with it still reading "demon"

(or at least shinigami lel)

The very first iteration come close to what I imagined BUT its execution was really too much sloppy

(a year ago I was a little bit of a scrub in 3d lol)
